A World Cup winner turned up in an unexpected place last weekend. Pedri’s Su Super League cameo lit up grassroots football in China. On Saturday evening, he performed the ceremonial kickoff for the fiery Suzhou versus Wuxi derby.
Pedri Su Super League Cameo Wows the Crowd
The 23-year-old Spain and Barcelona midfielder arrived fresh off winning the World Cup. Nearly 32,000 fans packed the Suzhou Sports Center Stadium to greet him, with tickets long sold out. Pedri even wore a special jersey blending the colours of both clubs, stamped with “Su-Xi.” Moreover, he charmed the crowd with a greeting in the local dialect.
Then came the big moment. Pedri dribbled to the centre circle and rolled the ball to a Suzhou player. As a result, the ground erupted. At halftime, he stayed to interact with supporters and answer questions. His visit formed part of a brand tour of China. He also tried traditional Chinese dress and played cuju, football’s ancient ancestor.
A World Cup Referee Reunion, Too
The star power did not stop with Pedri. International referee Fu Ming took charge of the derby in his first match since the World Cup. He became the first Chinese official to referee at the 2026 tournament, working seven games as a video assistant. His World Cup bow came as SVAR for Australia against Turkey. Notably, another was Spain’s group clash with Cape Verde, which Pedri started.
So the two crossed paths again in Suzhou. Fu Ming later hailed an atmosphere as fierce as the summer heat. On the pitch, Wuxi edged the derby 1-0 to climb top of the table. Ultimately, the Pedri Su Super League appearance proved a marketing masterstroke. It thrust a local league into the national spotlight, even if the football itself remained the real contest.
