At just 17, an Indian teenager has rewritten the record books in Taipei. Tanvi Sharma stormed to the biggest title of her young career on Sunday. As a result, she became the youngest champion in Taipei Open history.
Tanvi Sharma Taipei Open Triumph Breaks a Record
The teenager needed only 36 minutes to seal the win. In the final, she outclassed sixth seed Nguyen Thuy Linh 21-16, 21-16. Therefore, she claimed her maiden BWF World Tour Super 300 crown.
At 17 years and 222 days, Sharma surpassed a record set by her own idol. Previously, Taiwanese great Tai Tzu-Ying held the mark as the event’s youngest winner. Remarkably, Sharma had no idea she had broken it until reporters told her.
Moreover, she also became the youngest finalist in tournament history. That milestone edged out doubles legend Lee Yong Dae, who reached a final back in 2006.
A Landmark Moment for Indian Badminton
The Tanvi Sharma Taipei Open run carried national significance, too. She is only the second Indian woman to lift this singles title. Saina Nehwal, in 2008, was the first.
Furthermore, she joins an elite club as just the fourth Indian woman to win a Super 300 or higher event. Saina, PV Sindhu and Devika Sihag complete that list.
Composure defined her entire week. In fact, she dropped only one game across the whole tournament. Guided by Park Tae-sang, Sindhu’s former coach, she blended deception, sharp net play and fearless attack.
Sindhu herself hailed the breakthrough as merely the beginning. Now, with this Tanvi Sharma Taipei Open success behind her, the teenager is already chasing bigger goals.
