Rodri has completed his move to Barcelona from Manchester City in a transfer worth £65.4 million. The Spain midfielder, who was named player of the tournament during his country’s World Cup triumph this summer, passed his medical on Tuesday before putting pen to paper on a four year contract at Camp Nou.
Furthermore, Barcelona confirmed the agreement runs until June 30 2030 and praised Rodri’s tactical intelligence, composure and passing precision. Meanwhile, the 30 year old flew into El Prat airport on Monday and told reporters that playing for Barcelona felt like a dream come true.
From Atletico Record to Barcelona Dream
Rodri joined City from Atletico Madrid in July 2019 for a then club record £62.6 million. During seven seasons at the Etihad Stadium, he helped City win four Premier League titles and scored the winning goal in the 2023 Champions League final against Inter Milan. However, injuries limited his impact recently, since an ACL problem sidelined him for much of the 2024-25 season while hamstring and groin issues restricted his final campaign under Pep Guardiola. Despite this, he returned to top form for Spain during the World Cup in North America.
Consequently, Barcelona moved quickly once City’s asking price became clear, having two earlier offers turned down before agreeing the fee on Sunday. New City manager Enzo Maresca had reportedly hoped to keep the 2024 Ballon d’Or winner.
City Rebuilds Midfield After Departures
Rodri’s exit follows Bernardo Silva’s free transfer to Real Madrid and an agreed sale of Tijjani Reijnders to Al Qadsiah. Nevertheless, City have already brought in Elliot Anderson from Nottingham Forest for £116 million and remain linked with Lille’s Ayyoub Bouaddi and Chelsea’s Enzo Fernandez. In a farewell message, Rodri thanked City’s fans and staff, writing that Manchester had shaped his whole life and that his heart would always be blue.
