The Philadelphia 76ers are reshaping their roster fast, and their latest move is all about clearing financial room for a blockbuster offseason.
Philadelphia has reportedly traded forward Johni Broome and a second-round pick to the Los Angeles Clippers for cash, according to ESPN’s Shams Charania. The deal helps the 76ers duck under both the first and second aprons following a series of major signings.
76ers Clippers Trade Clears Room for LeBron James
Philadelphia recently signed LeBron James to a two-year, $8 million contract, while also bringing back Kentavious Caldwell-Pope. Those additions initially pushed the 76ers into the first apron. As a result, moving Broome off the books became necessary to get financially compliant on both fronts.
Broome is coming off a limited rookie season. He appeared in just 11 games, tallying 10 points, 16 rebounds and 4 assists across 55 total minutes. Philadelphia had selected him with the 35th overall pick in the 2025 draft, though he was not expected to play a major role in 2026-27 beyond a similar limited capacity.
Clippers Add Depth While Philadelphia Builds a New Core
For Los Angeles, the trade adds young depth to an already crowded group of forwards. The Clippers recently signed Rui Hachimura and acquired Gradey Dick and Brandon Ingram in the Kawhi Leonard trade with Toronto, though that deal still awaits league approval.
Meanwhile, Philadelphia’s roster overhaul goes well beyond the LeBron signing. The 76ers also traded for Jaylen Brown from the Boston Celtics, giving them a projected starting five of Tyrese Maxey, VJ Edgecombe, Brown, James and Joel Embiid.
Therefore, the Broome trade looks like a small but necessary step in a much bigger offseason plan. Philadelphia now shifts its focus toward blending this new star-studded lineup into a genuine contender.
