Fifth place at MotorLand looks harmless on a results sheet, but it did not feel that way from the saddle. The 2024 world champion spent all three days fighting an Aprilia that refused to bite into the tarmac, and the stopwatch told the story. He qualified half a second off pole and finished 12.572s behind the winner.
What went wrong for Jorge Martin at Aragon
Jorge Martin left Aragon convinced this was a circuit problem rather than a bike problem. Traction was his ceiling from the first session to the last lap, leaving him loose everywhere and unable to build speed. He did find a little more late in the race, enough to close on Alex Marquez.
The evidence backs him up. Marco Bezzecchi put the other factory RS-GP26 on the podium in third, so the machine clearly had more to give.
This was also nothing like the mystery slumps of Brno and Sachsenring. Martin reverted to an older set-up at Silverstone, took pole, won the sprint and finished second, then carried that same direction into Spain. The feeling stayed. Only the performance went missing.
Damage limitation as the title fight tightens
Sunday began well for Jorge Martin at Aragon. He slotted into second behind his team-mate before Marc Marquez muscled through at Turn 15, with Pedro Acosta and Alex Marquez following him past.
Marquez swept all 37 points on offer and now sits second on 237, cutting Martin’s advantage to 19. Bezzecchi is third on 232, which leaves three riders covered by 24 points. Fabio di Giannantonio of the Pertamina Enduro VR46 Racing Team slipped further adrift on 208.
Martin called this his worst weekend of the season for outright speed and was content to bank two top fives instead of crashing while chasing more. He hinted that bigger risks may be needed soon. Misano arrives in two weeks, and the latest championship standings suggest he cannot keep playing safe for long.
