For three months, one of the NBA‘s most productive young centers sat in contract limbo while the rest of free agency moved on without him. That wait is finally over.
The Detroit Pistons and Jalen Duren have agreed to a fully guaranteed five-year, $200 million deal, ESPN’s Shams Charania reported. The Jalen Duren extension works out to $40 million per season and ties the big man to Detroit through 2031.
Why the Jalen Duren Extension Took So Long
Duren entered restricted free agency in July after finishing his four-year, $19.5 million rookie contract. No rival team sent him an offer sheet, and talks with Detroit stalled for most of the summer.
His case for big money was strong. Duren passed on an extension in 2025 and answered with a career year, posting 19.5 points and 10.5 rebounds per game on 65% shooting. He earned his first All-Star nod and a third-team All-NBA spot as the Pistons went 60-22, the best record in the East.
That All-NBA honor made him eligible for a five-year max worth $287 million. The postseason took it off the table. Across 14 playoff games, Duren slipped to 10.2 points and 8.5 rebounds on 51.4% shooting. Detroit needed seven games to beat the Orlando Magic in round one, then fell to the Cleveland Cavaliers.
A Deadline Gamble Nobody Took
October 1 was the last day Duren could accept a one-year, $9.6 million qualifying offer. Signing it would have made him an unrestricted free agent in 2027, and The Athletic reported he seriously weighed that path.
Detroit blinked first. The front office raised its offer from $190 million to $200 million this week and dropped a weight clause that had held up the talks.
The Jalen Duren extension lands $87 million short of the max, but it removes the risk for both sides. Now the pressure moves to the court, where Duren has to prove his playoff dip was a blip and not his ceiling.
