One of the standout referees at the 2026 World Cup will watch the final from the sidelines. British media report that FIFA has ruled Michael Oliver out of the showpiece in the United States.
Why Michael Oliver Misses the World Cup Final
The reason has nothing to do with his form. In fact, FIFA chiefs have been hugely impressed by his displays across the tournament. However, England and Argentina both reached the semifinals, and the two nations now meet each other for a place in the final. Therefore, one of them will contest the title match.
That single fact ends Oliver’s hopes. Referees never officiate their home nation, so an England final is off limits. Moreover, FIFA does not assign English officials to Argentina matches either. The policy stems from the long-running Falklands sovereignty dispute between the two countries. As a result, Oliver cannot take the final whichever side comes through.
The restriction works both ways. Consequently, Argentine referee Facundo Tello is also out of contention, because England could reach the final too.
A Familiar Story for English Referees
This is not the first time the rule has bitten. The same policy kept Anthony Taylor from the 2022 final in Qatar, which Argentina played against France. Notably, Taylor has again been selected as a match official this year, yet he faces the identical block.
For Oliver, the timing stings most. Many had tipped him as the frontrunner to take charge of the final before the bracket fell into place. He has officiated several high-profile ties, including the Spain against Belgium quarterfinal, and he broke the record for the most World Cup games handled by an English referee.
Now FIFA will name its final officiating team once the semifinals conclude. Whoever gets the nod, Oliver’s strong tournament will end without the biggest prize in the game.
