Most players chase every last dollar. Austin Reaves did the opposite this summer, and the Los Angeles Lakers will benefit for years.

Inside the Austin Reaves Contract Decision

Earlier this month, Reaves signed the richest deal ever handed to an undrafted player in NBA history. However, U.S. reports reveal that his final four-year, $180 million extension came in $5 million below the preliminary agreement. In short, he willingly gave money back.

That decision matters more than the figure suggests. By trimming his salary, Reaves hands the Lakers extra cap flexibility. As a result, the team should be able to access the full Non-Taxpayer Mid-Level Exception in a future offseason. The deal also includes a player option in the final season.

For a former undrafted guard, this marks a stunning rise. Reaves entered the league in 2021 without a draft slot. Now, entering his sixth season in Los Angeles, he anchors the franchise alongside Luka Dončić.

A Bigger Role Awaits in Los Angeles

The responsibility only grows from here. With LeBron James no longer on the roster, Reaves steps into a leading role he has never carried before. Therefore, his commitment carries real weight for the Lakers’ next era.

Reaves made clear that staying was always the plan. He explained that both sides used the window before free agency opened on July 1 to finalise the extension early. His heart, he said, never left Los Angeles.

That loyalty is nothing new. Notably, Reaves told ESPN last season that he hoped to remain a Laker for his entire career. Locking in this contract pushes that ambition much closer to reality.

Now the focus shifts to the court. With Dončić leading the way and Reaves signed long term, the Lakers can finally build around a settled core. The pay cut may cost Reaves today, yet it could shape the franchise for seasons to come.
