The BWF has released fresh women’s singles world rankings, and the China Open has triggered a major shakeup near the very top of the leaderboard.
South Korea’s An Se-young remains firmly in the World No. 1 spot, with her position looking secure for now. However, the real story unfolds just below her.
Yamaguchi World Ranking Climbs to Second
Japan’s Akane Yamaguchi has jumped one spot to reclaim World No. 2 after collecting 12,000 ranking points for winning the China Open title. As a result, China’s Wang Zhiyi drops to third in the updated standings.
Meanwhile, Chen Yufei holds steady at fourth, and Han Yue rounds out the top five. Although this shift did not come completely out of nowhere, the trend had been building for some time.
Yamaguchi defeated Chen Yufei in the China Open final, and that result directly reshaped the rankings picture. She earned the champion’s points, while Wang Zhiyi failed to even reach the final. Consequently, the points gap between the two players closed quickly, allowing Yamaguchi to move ahead.
The BWF’s ranking system rewards this kind of tournament success. Players count their total points from their ten best results over the previous 52 weeks, and championship-winning points carry heavy weight. Therefore, a single major title is often enough to shift positions near the top.
A Season of Consistency Behind the Rise
Yamaguchi’s climb reflects a season of remarkable consistency rather than a single lucky run. Since the start of 2026, she has already claimed three titles, at the China Open, Thailand Open and Australian Open.
In addition, she reached three more finals at the Indonesia Open, Singapore Open and Japan Open. With three titles and three runner-up finishes, Yamaguchi now holds an 84% win rate this season. Numbers like these remain rare in women’s singles badminton, especially at her stage of career.
