Draymond Green is staying put in the Bay Area. The veteran forward has agreed to return to the Golden State Warriors on a one-year, $27.7 million contract, closing the book on a saga that began with him voluntarily walking away from that exact same deal.
Draymond Green Warriors Deal Comes Full Circle
Green originally opted out of his $27.7 million player option earlier this offseason. He did so specifically to clear cap space, giving Golden State room to pursue superstar free agent LeBron James. However, James ultimately chose the Philadelphia 76ers instead, closing that door for good.
With the James pursuit dead, both sides quickly circled back to the obvious solution. Green re-signed at the identical salary figure he had turned down, essentially compensating him for the gamble. As a result, the Warriors now find themselves with an aging, expensive roster and one final realistic shot at a Western Conference playoff push.
Green’s individual numbers last season don’t jump off the page. He started 68 games while averaging just 8.4 points, 5.5 rebounds and 5.5 assists. Nevertheless, his value has never been measured purely by stat lines, and his return keeps the franchise’s championship core intact for at least one more year.
Warriors Face a Closing Window
Whether this translates into playoff success remains far from guaranteed, especially since Golden State missed on James and didn’t execute any major roster overhaul this summer.
Adding to the urgency, Stephen Curry, Green and Jimmy Butler, the roster’s three highest-paid players, will all hit free agency once the 2026-27 season ends. Together, they currently command roughly $147 million annually. By the time that season concludes, Curry will be 38, Green 36 and Butler 37, an enormous financial commitment for players entering the twilight of their careers.
Clearly, this isn’t a roster built with the future in mind. Instead, it’s constructed for one last run at a championship before the current era in Golden State comes to a close.
