Anthony Davis and the Washington Wizards will not restart contract extension discussions until the 2026-27 season is already underway, according to a report from The Athletic’s Josh Robbins. Sources say both sides have mutually agreed to wait roughly 20 games into the year before revisiting a possible deal.
Davis became extension eligible on Thursday for a four year deal worth up to $275 million. Additionally, he holds a $62.8 million player option for the 2027-28 season that a new agreement would replace.
Why the Anthony Davis Extension Is on Hold
Washington’s roster looks dramatically different heading into training camp. Specifically, the Wizards added No. 1 overall pick AJ Dybantsa, acquired center Deandre Ayton from the Los Angeles Lakers, and locked up point guard Trae Young to a four year, $212 million extension in July. Therefore, both Davis and the front office want to see how the pieces fit together before committing further.
Davis’ Injury History Complicates the Anthony Davis Extension Outlook
Davis, 33, has battled injuries throughout his career. Indeed, since playing a career high 76 games in 2023-24, he has appeared in just 71 games total across the past two seasons. Last season alone, hand and finger injuries limited him to 20 games with the Mavericks before Dallas traded him to Washington in February, and he never took the court for the Wizards. Still, when healthy, Davis has produced averages of 24.0 points, 10.7 rebounds, and 2.3 blocks per game for his career.
Meanwhile, Washington finished with the NBA’s worst record last season at 17-65, though the team was tanking without Davis and Young in pursuit of the top draft pick. Nevertheless, Davis has voiced confidence in the Wizards’ young talent, including Dybantsa, Alex Sarr, Kyshawn George, and Bilal Coulibaly. Ultimately, both sides appear willing to let the early part of the season shape their next move.
