Chilean forward Alexis Sánchez has agreed to join CF Montreal as a Designated Player, ending an 18-year run through European football and beginning a new chapter in Major League Soccer. The move brings one of Chile’s most decorated players to a club that had not used any of its three available Designated Player slots before this signing.
Sánchez helped Chile capture back-to-back Copa América titles in 2015 and 2016 and later reached the 2017 FIFA Confederations Cup final. He remains the national team’s all-time leader in both goals, with 51, and appearances, with 168. Meanwhile, his club career has taken him through some of Europe’s biggest sides, including Barcelona, where he won a La Liga title, along with Arsenal, Manchester United, Inter Milan, Marseille and Udinese. Most recently, he spent last season with Sevilla, scoring four goals in 28 appearances.

Sánchez has signed with Montreal through the 2027 MLS Sprint Season, and the club holds an option to extend the deal into the 2027-28 campaign, which will be the first to follow the league’s new summer-to-spring calendar. “I am very happy to join CF Montreal and take on this new challenge,” Sánchez said in a news release. “I’m grateful to the club for the confidence they’ve shown in me, and I’m eager to put my experience to work so that we can reach our objectives and create memorable moments for our supporters.”

Luca Saputo, the club’s senior director of recruitment and sporting methodology, called the signing an important step for the team’s sporting project and said Sánchez’s leadership should have an immediate effect both on the field and in the locker room. Montreal currently sits 14th in the 15-team Eastern Conference, having managed four wins, ten losses and four draws through 18 matches. Still, the club remains alive in the Canadian Championship, where it will face the Vancouver Whitecaps in a two-legged semifinal for a spot in the Concacaf Champions Cup.
