For an hour, Sunday’s Premier League meeting at Anfield looked like a tight, nervy contest. Then Ryan Gravenberch picked up a second yellow card in the 62nd minute. Manchester City took full advantage and won 3-0.
Liverpool, missing Dominik Szoboszlai, Alexander Isak and Cody Gakpo through injury, had reached half time goalless. Gravenberch’s first booking had come for a foul in the 47th minute.
Liverpool vs Man City Swings on a Second Yellow
The Liverpool vs Man City deadlock lasted until the 65th minute, when Erling Haaland broke through. Jeremy Doku doubled the lead three minutes later, set up by Elliot Anderson. Rayan Cherki then made it 3-0 in the 78th minute from a Joško Gvardiol pass. Haaland was substituted in the 80th minute with the points secured.
City’s changes shaped the finish. Doku had been on for just 12 minutes when he scored, after replacing Iliman Ndiaye. Gvardiol, who later set up Cherki, had come on for Nico O’Reilly in the 66th minute.
The Liverpool vs Man City stats are more nuanced than the scoreline. City held 65% of the ball and had 33 touches in the Liverpool box, against 16 at the other end. Even so, Liverpool managed 13 shots to City’s 15. The visitors turned roughly 1.3 expected goals into three.
Nine-Point Gap Leaves Liverpool Chasing the Leaders
City arrived for their first match since being found guilty of breaching the league’s financial rules. They answered with a composed, efficient display.
City have won all six league games for 18 points. Liverpool have nine points from two wins, three draws and one defeat. That form puts early pressure on every chasing side, and Liverpool are already looking up at a nine-point gap.
Both clubs are back in the next round of fixtures on Saturday, October 17. Liverpool travel to Brentford while City host Ipswich Town. Liverpool will want a quick reaction before the gap widens further.
