Injury Timeline and Recovery Outlook
The Portland Trail Blazers will operate without one of their top scorers for a significant chunk of the 2026-27 season after Shaedon Sharpe suffered a torn meniscus in his right knee. According to ESPN’s Shams Charania, doctors expect Sharpe to remain sidelined for roughly six months. Consequently, barring any complications, he could return to game action around late February or early March.
The setback reportedly occurred during an individual offseason training session, as first reported by The Oregonian’s Joe Freeman. As a result, Sharpe is scheduled to undergo surgery this week to repair the damage.
Legacy Season and Squad Depth Moving Forward
Last season, Sharpe posted career-best averages of 20.8 points and 4.3 rebounds per game, marking his fourth year since Portland selected him seventh overall in the 2022 NBA Draft. Furthermore, he inked a four-year, $90 million extension with the franchise last fall, a deal that runs through the 2029-30 season.
Sharpe also played a central role in guiding the Trail Blazers to a 42-40 record and their first playoff berth since 2021, though the team fell in the opening round. Notably, that stretch came after former head coach Chauncey Billups was arrested just one game into the season over his alleged involvement in a rigged poker operation. Tiago Splitter subsequently took over on an interim basis, and the club later hired Micah Nori as his permanent replacement.
Despite losing Sharpe for an extended stretch, Portland enters the season with fresh reinforcements at the guard spot. In particular, the team acquired Ja Morant this offseason in a blockbuster trade with the Memphis Grizzlies. Meanwhile, veteran Damian Lillard is expected to make his return after sitting out all of last season with a torn Achilles, and Jrue Holiday adds further experience to the backcourt rotation. Additionally, Scoot Henderson should see an expanded role while Sharpe recovers.
Portland will officially open its 2026-27 campaign against the Phoenix Suns on October 21, and the team will need every bit of that added depth right away.
