Klay Thompson Redemption Season Kicks Off With the Heat
Klay Thompson officially joined the Miami Heat on Tuesday, receiving a No. 11 jersey at his introductory press conference. The four-time champion explained that he chose Miami because the franchise offers a competitive, demanding atmosphere that pushes players to perform. Additionally, he said the opportunity to play high-level basketball throughout the year and chase a deep postseason run drew him to the team, noting that he has tasted winning before and nothing compares to it.
Looking ahead, Thompson framed his first year in Miami as the start of a Klay Thompson redemption season, explaining that even at 36 years old, he still believes he can perform at a high level. However, his declining scoring numbers have raised questions about how much he has left. After averaging 21.9 points with the Golden State Warriors in 2022-23, his output dropped to 17.9, then 14.0, and finally 11.7 points per game last season with the Dallas Mavericks, where he started just eight of 69 appearances.

Still, Thompson insists this Klay Thompson redemption season is really about proving he can contribute to winning basketball consistently. Meanwhile, his exact role in Miami remains undecided, though he could split time between starting and coming off the bench. Tim Hardaway Jr., who averaged 13.5 points with the Denver Nuggets last season, is also competing for minutes at shooting guard. While Hardaway signed a one-year, $6.065 million contract, Thompson agreed to a two-year, $11.48 million deal that includes a player option for next season.
Notably, Thompson was not Miami’s biggest offseason addition. The Heat previously acquired two-time MVP Giannis Antetokounmpo and Bobby Portis from the Milwaukee Bucks in a blockbuster trade that sent Tyler Herro, Kel’el Ware, Jaime Jaquez Jr., Kasparas Jakučionis and several draft assets to Milwaukee. Consequently, a potential starting lineup could feature Davion Mitchell, Thompson, Andrew Wiggins, Antetokounmpo and Bam Adebayo, giving Miami one of its most talented rosters in years.
