Badminton fans just got a first look at how the sport will evolve over the next two years. The Badminton World Federation has released its full 2027-2028 BWF World Tour calendar, and it comes packed with change.
A Packed BWF World Tour Calendar Ahead
The new BWF World Tour calendar lists 35 tournaments stretching from January through December. Levels range from Super 100 events all the way up to the elite Super 1000 tier, finishing with the season-ending World Tour Finals.
Five Super 1000 tournaments sit at the top of the pyramid, split between venues in Asia and Europe. Each one runs across 11 days and two full weekends, giving players a demanding but structured stretch of top-level competition.
The singles format brings 48 players into group stages before the knockout rounds begin. Doubles, however, sticks to a straight knockout draw featuring 32 pairs. Altogether, the five Super 1000 events alone will produce 1,095 matches, and every single one will be broadcast worldwide.
Scoring Shake-Up Hits Every Tournament
Perhaps the biggest talking point is the format itself. Every tournament on the calendar will switch to a best-of-three games, 15-point scoring system starting 4 January 2027.
The BWF frames this as a long-term move to modernize the sport and sharpen its global presentation. As a result, fans should expect faster-paced matches and a noticeably different rhythm to rallies compared to the traditional 21-point system.
Editors covering the announcement see this as more than a scheduling update. The revised calendar, they argue, should offer players better recovery windows between events. That, in turn, could help athletes chase peak form for longer and extend their careers at the top level.
With the new scoring system and packed calendar now confirmed, all eyes turn to how players adjust once the 2027 season gets underway.
