The Phoenix Suns are keeping Dillon Brooks around for the long haul. Brooks agreed to a three-year, $73 million extension on Wednesday, according to ESPN’s Shams Charania, and the deal runs through the 2029-30 season while rewarding him for the best season of his career.
Dillon Brooks Extension Rewards Career Year
Brooks was entering the final year of a four-year, $86 million contract he signed with the Houston Rockets in 2023, and he would have reached free agency next summer. Instead, the extension locks him in as a core piece of the Suns roster for years to come. Meanwhile, Brooks delivered a career campaign after arriving in Phoenix as part of the seven-team trade that sent Kevin Durant to the Rockets last summer. He averaged career highs of 20.2 points and 3.6 rebounds per game, and he also shot better than 43% from the field, his best mark since his rookie season. However, a fractured left hand in February limited him to just 56 games.
Additionally, general manager Brian Gregory and Suns CEO Josh Bartelstein negotiated the new deal with Brooks’ agent, Mike George of Klutch Sports, over recent weeks. Furthermore, owner Mat Ishbia has committed to reentering the luxury tax so the front office can keep this roster together for another run.
Suns Continue Building Around Dillon Brooks Extension
The Suns went 45-37 last season and reached the playoffs as the No. 8 seed, though Oklahoma City swept them in the first round. Still, rookie head coach Jordan Ott guided a roster that outperformed expectations, and the front office has since worked to keep that core together. Beyond Brooks, the team also reached long term deals with guard Collin Gillespie and center Mark Williams. Moreover, Phoenix acquired forward Miles Bridges in a trade with the Charlotte Hornets and added guard Luke Kennard in free agency.
Ultimately, locking down Brooks gives the Suns valuable continuity heading into Ott’s second season, as the team looks to build on last year’s surprising playoff run.
