A blow to the face turned into a freak knee injury for Brighton right back Mats Wieffer, one of the strangest incidents of the new Premier League season. He went down clutching his face during Sunday’s 4-3 defeat at Chelsea, only to discover the real damage was in his knee.
How Wieffer’s Knee Injury Happened
Brighton head coach Fabian Hurzeler broke down the freak incident ahead of the trip to face Leeds United, comparing it to a boxer taking a heavy punch. He said the blow to Wieffer’s face made his legs momentarily give way, twisting the knee out of position rather than any direct contact causing the harm.
Wieffer reportedly held his face as he hit the turf, then reached for his knee once he stood back up. Remarkably, he played on for another ten minutes before Brighton pulled him off, a sequence Hurzeler called strange and unlucky.
The 26 year old Dutchman, a summer 2024 arrival from Feyenoord, had started both of Brighton’s opening two Premier League fixtures this season at right back and made three blocks against Chelsea before the freak moment. Losing him now leaves Hurzeler light in defense, with summer arrival Costinha the likely option to deputize against Leeds.
Brighton’s Injury List Keeps Growing
Wieffer’s setback adds to an already crowded treatment room at the Amex that includes Kaoru Mitoma and Jack Hinshelwood, neither expected back until October. Hurzeler confirmed Wieffer will miss the next four games, including the visit to Leeds and a Carabao Cup trip to Manchester United.
The good news is that the issue is not considered serious. If his recovery goes smoothly, Wieffer could return for the trip to Sunderland on October 10, giving Brighton back a key piece of a backline stretched thin by injuries as they push through a congested opening to the season.
