Speaking with Bobby Manning, the Boston guard explained that nothing really shocks him anymore given how often the league shifts overnight. He noted that seeing a longtime teammate depart always stings, but he added that the business side of the sport eventually takes over, and players have to shift their mindset toward preparing to compete against a former running mate.
The trade sent Brown to Philadelphia in exchange for Paul George and a package of draft picks, ending the forward’s decade-long run in Boston. Consequently, the deal has reshuffled the balance of power in the Eastern Conference, with the 76ers now viewed as legitimate title contenders after also adding LeBron James to their roster this offseason.
Payton Pritchard Trade Opens Door for Bigger Role
Beyond the emotional weight of the move, the Payton Pritchard trade fallout also points toward a larger opportunity for the sixth-year guard. With Brown gone, George steps into a featured role, but young players such as Hugo Gonzalez, Baylor Scheierman and Sam Hauser should see increased minutes as well. Still, Pritchard appears best positioned to benefit.
Coming off a breakout 2025-26 season in which he averaged 17.0 points per game while shooting nearly 38 percent from three-point range, Pritchard should see his usage climb further as Jayson Tatum returns to full health. As a result, he figures to handle the ball more often, create additional looks for teammates and continue improving his assist numbers.
Payton Pritchard Trade Reaction Reflects Shifting East
Meanwhile, Boston’s rivals have also strengthened their rosters this summer. The Cavaliers added Peyton Watson in a trade with Denver, while Miami bolstered its frontcourt with Giannis Antetokounmpo and later added Klay Thompson after his buyout from Dallas. The Celtics and Heat are scheduled to meet on Christmas Day, one of several matchups between the two clubs this season.
