Cavaliers Peyton Watson Trade Reshapes Roster
The Cleveland Cavaliers have completed a four-team trade to acquire forward Peyton Watson from the Denver Nuggets, agreeing to sign him to a four-year, $88 million contract, according to ESPN’s Shams Charania. Consequently, Cleveland strengthens its wing rotation just as the offseason winds down.
As part of the arrangement, Max Strus heads to the Los Angeles Clippers, while the Nuggets receive an unprotected 2031 first-round pick from Cleveland along with a 2032 second-round pick originally belonging to the Sacramento Kings. Meanwhile, the Clippers are sending a 2027 second-round pick, previously acquired from Philadelphia, onward to Washington as part of a related transaction.
In a separate but connected move, the Cavaliers are sending guard Tre Mann and cash to the Washington Wizards in exchange for forward Cam Whitmore. Additionally, Washington is shipping big man Julian Reese to Denver, where he is expected to be waived.
Watson Trade Fills Cleveland’s Forward Need
With Watson now locked into the roster, Cleveland is expected to turn its attention toward re-signing James Harden, further rounding out a lineup built to compete in the Eastern Conference. Meanwhile, Denver may look toward veteran guard DeMar DeRozan to help offset Watson’s departure, according to a separate report from NBA TV’s Chris Haynes.
Watson, the No. 30 overall pick in the 2022 draft, was previously tendered a $6.5 million qualifying offer by Denver, which made him a restricted free agent this offseason. Over 54 games last season, he posted career highs of 14.6 points, 4.9 rebounds and 2.1 assists per contest while shooting 49% from the field. However, a hamstring strain limited him down the stretch, sidelining him for Denver’s first-round playoff exit.
Despite the injury, Watson’s stretch run performance, particularly while starters Aaron Gordon and Nikola Jokić were sidelined, established him as one of this summer’s most sought-after free agents.
