Chiharu Shida announced on July 31 that her partnership with Arisa Igarashi had come to an end. She shared the news on Instagram, and the Japan Badminton Association confirmed the same day that both players had withdrawn from the 2026 national team. Meanwhile, Shida’s management agency, AMD Sports International, offered a brief explanation, stating that the pair had continued searching for their ideal style of play since teaming up, but differing views on competition and future direction ultimately led to the split.
A Decade of Success Before the Split
Shida, now 29, spent more than a decade partnered with Nami Matsuyama before that pairing ended. Together they reached a career-high world ranking of No. 2 and won bronze at the 2024 Paris Olympics. Their partnership concluded at the 2025 World Championships in Paris, where they closed out their run together with another bronze medal. Afterward, Shida moved on to a new pairing with Igarashi starting in September 2025. The new duo debuted at the Hong Kong Open and, notably, won the All Japan Championships in their very first tournament together that December.
An Uncertain Road Ahead
Despite that promising start, results cooled over the following months, and the pair’s world ranking slipped to around 16th by May 2026, a steep drop from Shida’s previous heights. In March 2026, Shida also left her longtime team, Saishunkan Pharmaceutical, to train independently and dedicate more time to the partnership, with an eye toward the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics. That plan, however, did not extend far enough to sustain the pairing. With the partnership now dissolved and her national team spot relinquished, Shida’s next move remains unclear. Whether she will pursue a new partner or take time to reassess her career, her fans and Japan’s badminton community will be watching closely for her next announcement.
