Heartbreak hit the France camp in Boston on Tuesday morning. Didier Deschamps learned that his mother had passed away, just days before a decisive World Cup clash. The news shook Les Bleus to the core.

Deschamps Leaves the France Squad

According to the French Football Federation, Deschamps will return home to attend the funeral. As a result, he will not be on the touchline in Foxborough on Friday. The federation also wished its head coach strength during such a painful time.

Longtime assistant Guy Stéphan will lead the team in his absence. Meanwhile, the players must quickly regroup for a major World Cup test.

France sit top of Group I on six points after beating Senegal 3-1 and Iraq 3-0. Norway match them on six points, yet trail narrowly on goal difference. Both nations have already reached the knockout round. However, Friday’s meeting will still decide the group winner.

A Familiar Heartbreak for Didier Deschamps

For Didier Deschamps, this is sadly familiar ground. Back in May 2022, his father died suddenly just before the Nations League began. On that occasion too, Stéphan stepped up while the coach grieved.

French media report that the squad now wants to turn pain into purpose. The players reportedly hope to dedicate a Norway win to their coach. Furthermore, they believe a strong result could offer him real comfort in the days ahead.

The mood stayed somber across the camp. Before a warm-up match against MLS side New England Revolution, France’s players observed a minute’s silence. They paused to honour Deschamps’ late mother.

At 57, Deschamps had already announced he will step down after the tournament. That decision closes a remarkable 14-year chapter with Les Bleus. For now, though, football takes a back seat. As France chase top spot on Friday, their thoughts stay firmly with their grieving coach.
