The Sebastian Berhalter transfer to EFL Championship side Middlesbrough is reportedly nearing completion, according to a report from The Athletic. As a result, his four year run with the Vancouver Whitecaps looks set to end this summer.
Berhalter Set to Leave Vancouver for Middlesbrough
Berhalter has played for the Whitecaps since 2022 and built a reputation as one of MLS’s most reliable midfielders during that stretch. However, with his contract set to expire after the 2026 MLS season, Vancouver reportedly agreed to cash in now rather than risk losing him for nothing. Middlesbrough will therefore pay a fee of around $2 million to complete the signing.
The 25 year old recently earned MLS Best XI honors and has been named an All Star twice, so the fee reflects his standing in the league. Meanwhile, Vancouver enjoyed a strong campaign of its own last season, reaching the MLS Cup final and winning the Canadian Championship, and Berhalter was a key contributor throughout that run.
Beyond his club form, Berhalter also impressed on the international stage this summer. He appeared in all five USMNT matches at the World Cup and has scored twice in his international career so far, including a goal against Türkiye during the group stage. He debuted for the national team last summer after Mauricio Pochettino took charge, and he is also the son of former USMNT head coach Gregg Berhalter.
A Reunion With a Familiar Face at Middlesbrough
Once the move is finalized, Berhalter will link up with close friend and former Columbus Crew teammate Aidan Morris, who joined Middlesbrough in 2024. The club has spent most of the past 16 seasons in the Championship and came agonizingly close to promotion last term. Middlesbrough finished fifth in the regular season, then benefited when the EFL expelled Southampton from the playoff final over a spying scandal, reinstating Boro to face Hull City instead. Even so, Middlesbrough could not complete the fairytale, falling 1-0 to Hull City at Wembley Stadium in the playoff final.
