Coventry City manager Frank Lampard confirmed Wednesday that USMNT striker Haji Wright faces a lengthy spell on the sideline due to a serious quad injury, with a recovery timeline that could stretch up to 12 weeks. According to Lampard, the injury is significant enough that the club is bracing for Wright’s extended absence just as the Sky Blues begin life back in the Premier League.
Haji Wright Injury Comes at Worst Time for Coventry
The 28-year-old forward sat out Coventry’s final two preseason friendlies against Espanyol and Monaco, and the setback now rules him out of Friday’s Premier League opener against defending champions Arsenal. Meanwhile, the timing could hardly be worse for Coventry, since Wright was instrumental in the club’s promotion campaign, finishing third in the Championship scoring charts with 17 goals last season and reaching double digits for a third consecutive year. Coventry, a founding member of England’s top flight, last competed in the Premier League during the 2000-01 season, making Friday’s match at Arsenal a long-awaited return. Because Wright will not be available, other forwards will likely see increased opportunities up front while he recovers.
Haji Wright Injury Threatens USMNT Availability
Beyond the club implications, the Haji Wright injury also complicates his international outlook. Should the 12-week timeline hold, Wright would miss the USMNT’s upcoming friendlies during the September international window, when the Americans are scheduled to host Peru in Orlando on Sept. 25, Chile in St. Louis on Sept. 29, Mexico in Arizona on Oct. 3, and Canada in Minnesota on Oct. 6. Wright featured for the United States at both the 2022 and 2026 World Cups, playing all four matches in Qatar before making only brief appearances during this summer’s tournament. Following the September window, the USMNT will regroup in November for the Concacaf Nations League, by which point Wright may finally be nearing a return for club and country alike.
