History was made in Istanbul on Wednesday night as Aston Villa lifted the UEFA Europa League trophy for the first time, brushing aside Freiburg 3-0 in a performance that announced them as genuine European royalty.
It was Youri Tielemans who broke the deadlock just before half-time, connecting with a Morgan Rogers cross from a short corner to thunder a volley past goalkeeper Noah Atubolu. The Belgian’s strike set the tone, and Villa were not done there. Emiliano Buendía added a stunning second with virtually the last touch of the half, cutting inside and curling a left-footed effort into the far corner from outside the box.
The Argentine was at it again after the break, weaving down the left and teeing up Rogers for a composed near-post finish to seal the win before the hour mark. Amadou Onana was inches away from a fourth when his header rattled the post, but Villa were comfortable coasting to the final whistle.
The victory was Unai Emery’s fifth Europa League title, and remarkably his third with a different club. Sevilla, Villarreal, and now Aston Villa, all sharing a curious “villa” connection in their names. Villa finished as the tournament’s top scorers with 31 goals, six more than Freiburg.
For a club that last won a European trophy in 1982 and had not lifted any silverware in 30 years, this night in Istanbul will live long in the memory.
